Community involvement is pivotal to both the True North AmeriCorps program and our members. On a national level, volunteerism and engagement is at its peak; people want to give back to their communities and research shows that Minnesotans volunteer more than nearly any other state.
Throughout the True North AmeriCorps service year, members are invited to be “engaged” in their community – both the community at their service site as well as in the broader community. Every year, TNAC members dedicate countless hours and valuable services, all of which have a tremendous impact on the community, the children and the families they serve.
True North AmeriCorps mobilizes our members to participate in a minimum of two civic engagement opportunities. Members can fulfill this requirement in a wide variety of ways, from serving dinner at a soup kitchen to organizing a book drive for the Big Red Bookshelf. Members are invited to learn about local civic engagement opportunities at the United Way of Greater Duluth’s Volunteer Center. Visit them online at www.volunteerduluth.org.
Since 2004, TNAC has been recognized as a National Lead Agency of Global Youth Service Day (GYSD). This annual April event is an opportunity to pull together community partners to address critical needs in the areas of Poverty and Homelessness, Literacy, Healthy Lifestyles and the Environment. Members are provided training and resources to develop their own GYSD project or can elect to participate in an annual city-wide project. Learn more at http://gysd.org
